Off Topic: Butt Cracks in San Francisco!
So every now and then, I like to use our blog to share some personal stories with you guys. After all, MJM Magic isn't just some faceless machine. We're a family run business who have our own stories to tell! This is one of those stories.
So last week, Brandi and I decided to head up to San Francisco to see a Giants baseball game. I was particularly excited, since this was the first time I had gone to a Giants game since I was a little kid.
First off, the ball park is AMAZING. Just standing at the entrance felt like I was entering some kind of amusement part.
Now, here's a little side note about myself which some would say is TMI. But hey, what do I care? What you see is what you get.
I normally stay away from large public places because I'm pee-shy. There, I said it. I get pee shy. That's where even if you have to pee so bad that your eyes turn yellow, you're not able to go in public places. So as you can imagine, with that kind of affliction, it's tough to go to concerts or large stadiums like this! Fortunately, I have gotten better and, well, let's just say the yellow stream has been a-flowing as of lately!
Ok......sorry for my A.D.D. kicking in there. Back to the game!
Brandi and I had a blast. The Giants kicked some serious ass that game, beating the Colorado Rockies by a score of 9 to 3. Buster Posey hit a homerun, and I made it through the entire game without having to use the bathroom. Yay me!
So what does this have to do with butt cracks? I thought you'd never ask!
As we were walking in front of the baseball stadium, there are always these street vendors trying to peddle their goods to you. Most are selling shirts or hats. One crazy lady was selling Churros which looked like they went stale a few months ago.
And then there's the Butt Crack water girl. She was outside the stadium selling "ice cold water for a buck." This was actually a great deal, since inside the stadium, a bottled water was FIVE FRICKING DOLLARS! No joke.
But what was great is that this chick selling water was 1) not wearing panties, and 2) had her butt crack showing every time she tried to help somebody.
So never being one to pass up a photo opportunity, my buddy Mark and I decided to secretly "pose" for a picture so that we can feature her butt crack front and center. Behold, the picture!
I was tempted to drop a few extra quarters down that crack and say, "Keep the change." But alas, we went on our merry way without saying anything to the poor girl. On the bright side of things, I think she was making a KILLING off those waters! I'm halfway tempted to sell water outside the ball games on my days off now! Hell, I already got the butt crack thing going on.....but I may need to shave it up a bit if I want to compete with this chick.

Spider Pen Pro Almost Gave Me a Heart Attack!
As you all know, the most hotly anticipated item of 2012 is finally upon us: the Spider Pen Pro by Yigal Mesika.
I could go on and on about how great this item is, but that's not really the point of this message! The point is that I personally UNDERESTIMATED how huge this release really was.
You see, I'm in charge of purchasing all items that we bring into our store. Many times, a product hits the market and it's up to me to gauge how much we think we can sell. Purchase too many, and we waste money in our tight budget. Purchase too few, and we are left with unfulfilled orders. It's a tight balancing act that I have to follow on a daily basis, and even after almost ten years of purchasing for MJM Magic, you would THINK that I'd have a formula to figure these things out by now! Well I don't!
But I digress!
So after a month of delays, we finally get word that the Spider Pen Pro is now shipping from the supplier. We had reserved a modest amount of these things, just enough to cover our preorders and a little extra for new customers. I knew that these were $150.00 a pop, and that the extra little reserves I had left would easily be able to cover any new orders coming in.
HOW WRONG I WAS!
In a matter of SECONDS, right after I announced the arrival of these things, the orders began to FLOOD IN like an avalanche. Normally that's a good problem to have! However, I quickly realized that this onslaught of new orders couldn't be fulfilled, because all of the Spider Pens were gone in the blink of an eye.
I was kicking myself. Literally. I bent over and kicked my own butt with the heels of my shoes, mad that I didn't proactively purchase more of these things. Was I blind? Did I not know that these would sell way more than I had reserved? Apparently so.
Quickly I threw on my cape and superhero outfit, making a few calls to try and scrounge up some more Spider Pens. I had high hopes that someone.....ANYONE......would have a few to spare for a handsome, shaved headed Californian like me.
Unfortunately, my hopes were deflated when I found out that the supplier was all out of them. Since that devastating news caused me to violently defecate in my superhero outfit, I slowly took it off in shame, and threw my trusty cape in the hamper.
I then began the painstaking task of telling all of our recent orders that the Spider Pen Pro, the very item I just finished announcing was finally available, had in fact sold out in SECONDS and is now on backorder. I was embarrassed, but more than that, I felt HORRIBLE. MJM Magic is a family run business, and it's my life's MISSION to make sure we take care of each and every customer. I didn't want anyone to feel like I misled them to purchase an item which wasn't available. The truth is that one second, we had enough, and the next second after announcing it, they completely sold out faster than we could update our website.
So where's the good news in all of this, Jeff?
Here is it. I busted my BUTT all day today, frantically calling my sources and literally begging to see if we could get some more of these. I tried everything. I pleaded. I grovelled. Finally, by what can only be described as a MIRACLE, I had a source who was able to find a secret stash of these Spider Pen Pros! Not only did we find enough to cover our recent onslaught of orders, but I was able to purchase three times MORE than we originally did to cover any new orders that haven't yet come through. We went from having a shortage to having a SURPLUS!
So bottom line: at least right now, in this moment, MJM MAGIC HAS PLENTY OF SPIDER PEN PROS to last for at least the next few days!
What usually happens is that these will continue to sell steadily on our website.....but once all the other dealers sell out, then everyone will come to us and our supply will disappear even faster. So if you haven't yet picked this up yet, don't wait. I speak from the heart when I say that I haven't seen anything move this fast in a very long time.

FREE GIFT - Unequal Equal Ropes - Orders over $50.00
We got our hands on a bunch of Unequal Equal Ropes! It's the first rope magic trick that we've ever given away, and even a beginner can learn to do it! In fact, this was the first rope trick I ever learned as a kid.
EFFECT: Performer shows three separate pieces of rope, each of a different size. There is a very short piece, a medium sized piece and a long piece. He then folds the three pieces and when the ropes are opened out again, all three pieces are seen to be the same length! This is a perfect illusion. If required, the three lengths of rope can be restored to their original sizes and passed out for examination.

Holiday Reminder - Memorial Day!
This is just a quick reminder that we are going to be CLOSED on Monday (May 28th) due to the Memorial Day holiday here in the United States. Most people seem to have three or four day weekends, and that makes everyone very happy!
I personally plan to spend the weekend hanging out with lots of friends. I think between Friday and Monday, Brandi and I are going to three different parties or get-togethers, so it should be lots of fun.
As always, with any holiday, our website is ALWAYS open, so you can still submit your orders and get them locked in. However, our office is closed so we won't be around to ship or process the order until normal business hours resume on Tuesday the 29th. Email responses will also be slow during this time, but will resume full force once we're back in the office.

Changes to our Canadian Free Shipping
I just wanted to give all of our Canadian customers a heads up. Due to rising postal costs, we have had to adjust our free shipping policy to Canada.
As many of you know, it's very rare to find ANY magic store in the USA or Europe which will ship FREE to Canada. Many that used to offer this have long since canceled that part of their policy because it simply costs too much.
Here at MJM Magic, we have ALWAYS offered some kind of free shipping option to Canada because we LOVE our northern neighbors! Despite rising postal costs and a poor economy, we have done our best to always offer free shipping, even though we lose money in most cases.
Recently, we were faced with a decision. We could eliminate the free shipping to Canada altogether, or we could adjust it for a healthy compromise. We opted for the latter, because we still want to have some sort of incentive for our Canadian customers to continue using MJM Magic as their one-stop magic shop.
You'll be happy to know that the changes we made are minor, so those of you who are still serious when it comes to magic will have no problems. Our policy used to offer Free Shipping to Canada if you spent more than $30.00, and your package was less than 4 pounds. This has now changed slightly. Now you must spend a minimum of $50.00 and the package must weigh less than three pounds.
Believe me, there was talk of making the minimum threshold $100.00 or getting rid of this free option altogether, but it's been decided to keep it low and therefore, the $50.00 limit will qualify for free shipping. This is still easily obtainable since most of our Canadian orders are well over $50.00, and those that aren't could easily qualify with an extra low priced item or two thrown in. Hey, who couldn't use an extra deck of cards or a plastic card wallet for those packet tricks? :)
And in case you're wondering, our free shipping policy within the USA hasn't changed (yet). That's still in place (minimum order of $30.00 and must weigh less than 4 pounds).

We hope you understand this new change, since we've really worked hard to be one of the only stores to offer such a flexible shipping policy and still offer the Free Shipping option despite our rising postal costs.

R.I.P. Ron Crumley
I just wanted to share with you a little story about Ron Crumley. You may be reading this and saying, "Ron who?"
Well, Ron Crumley had been a faithful customer of MJM Magic for many years. As you may know, I'm the owner of the store, so I tend to get very attached to those of you who continually come back and place follow up orders. I recognize your names, your requests, your special instructions that you leave on your orders, etc.
Well Ron Crumley was a guy who always left me a nice message when he placed an order. It's always the little things that people do which stand out. He didn't HAVE to leave any messages to us, but he always did.
His last order was just a few weeks ago, on February 9th, 2012. On his order, he left the message:
Hi Jeff,
Thanks for your great service! I always come back to MJM.
Ron Crumley
Of course, it made me smile as it always did. After all, we bust our butts each and everyday to make sure we take care of as many people as possible, so when someone leaves us a compliment, it gives us that extra boost of confidence knowing that we're doing something right.
So it saddened me to open up my email today and see the following letter from his wife:

We have another exciting issue of MJM's News and Reviews! This week, we look at one of my favorite Torn and Restored card effects!
NEWS: Last month, I was approached by the large company, Intuit, and they wanted to spotlight our company for an editorial piece they were doing. Of course, I was excited to be a part of it! They interviewed me about how MJM Magic came to be, and asked for some advice that I could give to other businesses. REVIEW: Rehab by Cameron Francis - DVD
A virtual angle-proof torn and restored card effect!
What I really liked about this DVD is that it teaches a torn and restored card effect that ANYONE can do. Many T&R effects out there require you to 1) only perform straight on with your spectator, or 2) palm a whole lot of pieces to keep track of. It may look good on TV or YouTube, but it's not so easy to pull off in a walk around setting.
With Rehab, it does a great job at handling both of these issues. The angles are great, the instruction is top notch, and the handling is easy enough for a beginner to learn and execute.
I personally would get this DVD just for learning Rehab, because it's worth the value of the purchase alone. But as if that wasn't enough, Cameron Francis included FIVE other effects on this DVD!

REVIEW: Rehab by Cameron Francis - DVD
A virtual angle-proof torn and restored card effect!
What I really liked about this DVD is that it teaches a torn and restored card effect that ANYONE can do. Many T&R effects out there require you to 1) only perform straight on with your spectator, or 2) palm a whole lot of pieces to keep track of. It may look good on TV or YouTube, but it's not so easy to pull off in a walk around setting.With Rehab, it does a great job at handling both of these issues. The angles are great, the instruction is top notch, and the handling is easy enough for a beginner to learn and execute.
I personally would get this DVD just for learning Rehab, because it's worth the value of the purchase alone. But as if that wasn't enough, Cameron Francis included FIVE other effects on this DVD!

Welcome to our first ever edition of MJM News and Reviews! This will be (hopefully) a weekly article we send out. It's designed to be an INTERACTIVE email, which means we want you to feel free to leave your feedback and comments to the topics we discuss! Keep reading and see what I mean!

REVIEW: Royal Scam by John Bannon
I admit, I am a sucker for card magic. Especially packet tricks, which you can easily carry around with you. What I love about Royal Scam is that it has all the great things you'd expect in a hard hitting card trick, but takes up little space.
It also has not one, but THREE climaxes that really catch people off guard. Here's what happens. You show your audience a stack of red backed Ace of Spades. You explain that one of the things you love to do with cards is Magic, Misdirection, and Make Money! Demonstrating the "Magic", you show how the packet turns all face up, or all face down, depending on how you twist the ace. Trust me, this baffles them when they see it!
Then, you explain that while you were doing the "Magic", you were busy "Misdirecting" them. You show that without them even knowing, the backs of the cards have all changed colors. Instead of all being red, they have changed to many different colors! Watch the demo and you will see what I mean.
The final climax is where you show how you "Make Money", by flipping over the best gambling hand known to man, the ROYAL FLUSH!

Holiday Hour Reminder - President's Day

MJM Magic Was Down........and BACK!
Whew, holy crap! What a way to come into work in the morning!
"What happened?" you may ask.
Well, the first thing I do every morning when I come to work is log into the MJM Magic website, and see how many new orders we received over the evening hours. So I went to my administration panel, but the website doesn't come up or respond.
Hmmmmm, that's odd. Perhaps the administration panel was down. So I then try to go to the customer website (the place you guys all see when you go to http://www.MJMMagic.com). To my SHOCK and HORROR, that site was also down as well.
Bottom line: the website was gone. Shut down. Not responsive. DOA. Flatlined. You get the picture!
I immediately called up our data center in Texas, and come to find out, they had disconnected our server due to an expired credit card! AGGGHHHH!!!! Apparently, I had some old contact information in there, so they had been trying to get a hold of me for a week to update our server billing information, but since we hadn't responded, they disconnected the server.
So I spent the first part of our morning on the phone, desperately trying to fix the situation. My biggest fear was that I would get them the payment, but they would destroy my hopes and dreams by saying the server was recycled or something. THANKFULLY, that wasn't the case. I simply paid them the invoice and the server was back online within two minutes.
Minor heart attack averted!
Thanks for being so patient, in case you happened to come to the site in the brief amount of time that it was offline. I am going to have a large cup of coffee now and try to calm down a bit after this scare!

ONE MORE THING TO KEEP IN MIND!
