Some Unexpected Downtime - YIKES!!

Whoa, that was a little bit scary!

So this morning, I wake up in bed to the sound of my kids jumping on my mattress. I tried to lay there for as long as I could, but that's like trying to take a nap backstage at a Metallica concert. It ain't gonna happen.

So I mosey on out of bed, and as usual, I go to check out things with MJM Magic to make sure everything is working (when you run a business, there is no such thing as a "weekend off!").

To my shock and horror, I see that the website is down! Keep in mind that this is the first time this has happened in over a year. So immediately, after almost defecating myself, I get my wits about me and go into scramble mode.

Fortunately, I found a solution and I was able to get it back up in under ten minutes. That is the good news. The bad news (for us, at least) is that the site appeared to have been down all last evening, all throughout the night, and into this morning......so we missed out on a lot of sales.

Happy Birthday, Brandi!

Shhhhh......she doesn't know that I'm secretly letting the cat out of the bag, but today is Brandi's 29th birthday!

A nice twist on a staple of card magic! The spectator is shown a series of cards. They have a FREE choice to merely THINK of any of the cards. The magician then begins to deal them, one by one, onto the table, with the proposition that he (the magician) will be able to whack the card before the spectator can.

Friday Recap: Hand Out 500

Is it really Friday? Wow, what a week we had! As you may know, the worldwide release of "Hand Out 500 by Steve Haynes" was released on Monday, and it's been literally flying off the shelves. Seriously. I actually saw one of them sprout wings and try to fly out the window before I wrestled it back to the ground!

I cannot say enough good things about this DVD. It's very well explained, and the effect is probably one of the best I've ever seen. It packs small, you carry it with you no matter where you're at, and there is an instant connection between you and the people you're performing for (because everyone understands money and the importance of it).

To me, one of the marks of a great effect is one that you can watch over and over, and even when you KNOW THE SECRET, you are still blown away by how visual and convincing it is. This is one of those tricks. I know how it works. I know all the moves. And yet, it still fools me when I watch it because it's THAT GOOD!

Most importantly though, when purchasing this effect, you're supporting not only us (thank you, thank you, thank you), but you're supporting a GREAT guy in Steve Haynes. I think this is an overlooked point that many don't consider. There are some real egotistical pumpkinheads out there who put out effects and think that they're one step away from sainthood. You don't realize that supporting certain creators (or companies) is directly feeding into that pompous attitude that they have.

Well, I am happy to say that Steve is not like that. He's a genuine nice guy. I sent him a text message this week, out of the blue, just thanking him for his contribution to the magic community, and within mere seconds, he called me back personally. Personal: Halloween Recap

Ok, I know, I am late with this, but I wanted to see how everyone's Halloween was? For me, being a dad of two kids, it's all about making the experience as magical and fun for them as possible.

Here is a quick shot of me walking with my youngest daughter, Katelyn.

As you can see, there were a TON of kids in the neighborhood. Some of them were way too old to be trick or treating, if you ask me. Don't get me wrong, I am all for holding onto your youth.....but when you're old enough to grow a BEARD, then you should probably stop going door to door for candy, and stick to the adult halloween parties!

I think the weirdest thing we saw was when someone opened up the door and was VIDEO TAPING all the kids walk up to get candy. Both my wife and myself looked at each other, thinking the same thing: "Who on earth video tapes random kids? What is the purpose of THAT video for future reference?" I can understand video taping your own kids as they walk, but everyone else's?

Weird.

Other than that, it was a great Halloween for the record books, and I got to raid through TWO bags of candy to pick out all my favorites: Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and a box of Nerds!

How To Hold Your Breath Like David Blaine?

Many of you will remember in the not-so-distant past when David Blaine held his breath on live TV for over 17 minutes, setting the new Guiness Book Record.

Well, recently at the TEDMED conference, he taught how he was able to accomplish this feat....and after only a few minutes of training, many people in the audience were able to increase their breath-holding stamina to over three minutes!

I originally saw this from my boys over at iTricks. It's a very inspiring video about Michael Matthews, and it makes you focus on being thankful and grateful for what you have.

I feel that many times, we lose sight of that which is truly important in life, and not taking anything for granted. Michael has been fighting cancer for some time now, and with our thoughts and prayers, he will be overcoming this once and for all.

R.I.P. Patrick Swayze

Yes, this is a magic blog, but as I've stated before, it's also a personal blog which reflects myself and those who work here.

In this case, we wanted to take a moment to acknowledge Patrick Swayze, who passed away today after a long battle with cancer. For anyone who has lost a loved one to cancer, you know how debilitating and cruel it can be. I am happy to hear that he passed quietly with family by his side.

You can read more about his life and story from this Associated Press article if you like. I simply wanted to say how saddened I was to hear of his passing, but thankful that he isn't suffering anymore.

I remember watching Outsiders and Red Dawn when I was a little kid, being fascinated by those movies. Then as I got older, I really liked Road House, Donnie Darko, and especially Ghost (one of my all time favorites!). Sorry, I never got into Dirty Dancing, although Jennifer Gray was HOT! Tsssssss! However, it's one of Brandi's favorite movies of all time, like most women out there, I'm sure!

So R.I.P. Patrick, and thank you for entertaining the world for so many years. You will never be forgotten.

Spotlight: By Forces Unseen - Ernest Earick

This is something I've wanted to do for a while now: highlight a product that I personally have found fascinating, but many people have probably never realized how amazing it really is.

In this case, it's the book 'By Forces Unseen.' I remember seeing an effect from this book many years ago, and finding it hard to believe that it wasn't REAL MAGIC. "How on earth could someone do this with sleight of hand," I remember thinking!

9/11: MJM Remembers

I made this movie almost EIGHT years ago, shortly after 9/11/01. It was back when I was running another humor based website (MyJokeMail.com) and I thought this video was gone forever. Fortunately, I found it archived on You Tube and I just had a chance to watch it again.

Like most Americans, that day affected me deeply, and opened my eyes to a lot of hatred and maliciousness that people have in this world (on all sides of the fence).

Back to Work, and a year older!

Well, I'm back working again after a nice, LOOOOONG labor day weekend. My wife and I went to Monterey to celebrate our SIX year wedding anniversary, and it was a very nice getaway.

Here's a funny story that happened on my trip. So my wife and I are getting these couples massages, where you're both being rubbed down at the same time by professional massage therapists. Well, this is only my third massage ever, so I am still a little nervous that I am not going to be a good patient.

So here's this girl (a pretty attractive European woman named Kate)......I'm laying face down on the table, and she's rubbing my legs pretty forcibly....and as she moves my leg, my skin rubs against the plastic table and rips this loud, farting sound.

Immediately, I begin to panick internally. "Do you think she thought that was a fart? Her face was right near my butt when she did it.....he HAD to know that I didn't just rip one on her forehead, right?" I felt myself tensing up.....to me, that would be my WORST NIGHTMARE as a massage therapist.

Just as I was beginning to put that behind me, she switches legs and the SAME THING HAPPENS AGAIN! Fortunately, she never said anything so I can only hope that she knew it was the table.

Of course, with all those fake farts flying around, I probably could have cut one for real and gotten away with it. :)

Now I am back to work at MJM Magic with a TON of weekend orders that have come in during the holiday. And on top of it all, today is my actual BIRTHDAY!

"Jeff - You mean to tell me you're working on your birthday?" Yep! There is no rest for the weary when you run a successful business! Besides, just knowing that I am taking care of our customers is one of the best gifts I can give to myself (sounds corny, but it's true). Each and every one of you who shops with us sacrifices your money and time and entrusts us with it.....so it means a lot to us to take care of you as best as we can.....even on birthdays!

Labor Day Holiday Hours

Hey everyone! Just a quick reminder that we're gearing up for the Labor Day holiday over here. While our website is still open for orders, nothing is going to be processed between Friday and Monday. That means you can still place your orders, but we won't physically be here to begin pulling merchandise until our normal UPS and USPS delivery schedule begins again on Tuesday the 8th.

That day (Tuesday the 8th) also happens to be my birthday, coincidentally, so I will be spending my birthday running around the store making sure all the holiday orders are packaged up and shipping on time!

This weekend also happens to be my 6 year wedding anniversary, so we plan on going to Monterrey, CA. to relax a little bit and take one last breather before the start of the busy Christmas season! :)

So again, as a reminder, nothing will be shipping out of our store this Friday thru Monday (September 4th thru September 7th) because of the Labor Day holiday. Any orders placed during that time will resume processing as normal on Tuesday.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family.

This is Rick’s wife Tammy. We have received a large number of emails and phone calls about his current situation. As some of you may know, Rick suffered a stroke this past Monday. He is actually doing very well, and although it appears that we will be dealing with the Stroke Clinic here in Pittsburgh for quite some time, Rick is hoping to resume a VERY limited schedule between now and the end of the year. We are even trying to convince his doctors to allow him to venture to Magic in the Rockies in a couple of weeks.

The reason for this message is that we want to thank everyone for their concern and good wishes. Rick is really sorry that he cannot respond to each of you individually, but the majority of his time is obviously being taken up by just taking it easy.

Dan Sperry is OK! Services will be held for his car.

I hope Dan doesn't mind me mentioning this, but he's a friend of mine and I am so thankful that he's alright.

So here's the backstory. I was texting him back and forth a few days ago about the Crimson Decks and some upcoming projects we are going to work on. His responses were a little short, and he told me it was because he was just in a car accident.

"Car accident?" I asked if he was OK, and he said he was fine. Now, because the accident just happened and we were texting, I thought it was probably a bad fender bender or something. Then I saw the picture he took on his cell phone, and my testicles shrank into my stomach.

All I have to say is thank God he was OK. It was only a few months ago that he was driving me around town in that same vehicle, and all it takes is one bonehead not paying attention to t-bone you to turn your life upside down.....literally.

Cyril Takes Matrix To The Next Level

I have always been fascinated with coin matrix effects. Here is a clip from Cyril in Japan, performing one of the most visual ones I've ever seen on television:

Do You Perform With Grapes? THEN STOP!

This is probably more of a public service announcement than anything else. If there is one thing that has KILLED many careers, it's a bad stigma associated to them. Here's what I mean. When I say, Charles Manson, what comes to your mind? Probably the image of a deranged serial killer who orchestrated the murders of many innocent people. But what about the successful neighborhood magician who shared his name? Now no one wants to pay a penny to see his show, and he's forced to pick some fictitious stage name.

So what I am bringing that up for? Simple. In one word, it's GRAPES.

"Grapes?"

Yes, grapes. I know that many magicians out there are highly creative, but please be warned. If any of you are using grapes in your act, you should know that they've been getting some bad publicity lately (at least here in North America).

"Grapes? Jeff, what are you talking about?"

Oh, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. If you substitute some grapes into your Cups and Balls routine during one of the loads, then I'm talking to you. If you do a mini Zombie Ball routine using a grape, then PAY ATTENTION! You might think it's all fun and games, but you just might be associated with the GRAPIST. My Daughter Broke Her Arm

This blog is not only a window into the MJM Magic scene, but it's also a doorway into my personal life (because let's face it, MJM is just as much a part of me as my own family!)

So yesterday, the unthinkable happens. My wife calls me up and says that my youngest daughter (Katelyn, almost 2 yrs old) fell off a chair and broke her arm. I rushed home just in time for them to come back from Urgent Care, where we had to anxiously await a phone call from the doctor regarding her x-ray results. As you can see from the picture, even when she passed out, she was still holding her arm in pain.

The call eventually came and the news was bad: she fractured her arm. She is to remain in a cast for two weeks, which means she requires a lot more constant care than normal. Little things like eating with utensils and getting up on the couch are now almost impossible for her. Things that normally weren't a big deal (like seeing her trip over a toy) suddenly become astronomically worse, because even a small fall would send her landing on that arm again.

To be honest, the most heartbreaking thing is when she looks up at me and says, "Daddy, take it off my hand....take it off." I have to tell her that I can't take it off, baby......we have to wait until it's better. :(

But it could have been a LOT worse, so for that, I am thankful. As you can see, she now gets anything she wants during this recovery time. Goldfish? Fruit Snacks? You got it, Katelyn! Just relax and try not to hurt yourself anymore, for Pete's sake.

KARMA: Masked Magician Fails Miserably!

When you make your living by exposing the hard work of other honest magicians, one gets a little bit of satisfaction watching this guy FAIL MISERABLY on a live television show. My satifaction in watching this is only matched by the uncomfortableness that you can feel when everything goes horribly wrong!

MJM Going Solar?

Hey guys - sorry for not posting more often. In addition to running the store and speedily processing all your orders, I am researching a new project. It's more of a side thing, really....but I have been on this "solar" kick mentality for the last few weeks and I have no idea why. One of the things I thought would be killer is to convert the MJM Magic office to run entirely on solar power!

Pretty far fetched, and believe me, I got Brandi over here rolling her eyes thinking that I've completely lost it....but how neat would that be? To run all our computers and printers on nothing but solar energy? We wouldn't be doing it so much to save money (since solar systems are far more expensive than just paying the utility for power), but more so to say "We did it!" and to run the business on "clean renewable energy."

I will keep any solar project updates in this blog, since it's bound to be a HUGE undertaking if I ever get around to it.

Little Update from Jeff

Hidey-ho, everyone! Just wanted to drop this little update to THANK each and every one of you for continuing to be a part of our MJM family! Last month (July) proved to be the biggest July we've ever had in the last couple of years!

A large part of that had to do with the promotions we continue to have where we give away lots of free stuff, but I honestly feel that the MAIN reason why we continue to grow is because of YOU. Word of mouth and positive testimonials are what we live for, and that's the real fuel behind our success. Unlike other companies, we don't dump a lot of money into advertising or flashy ads. Why? Simply because that would focus on US US US. We would rather focus on YOU YOU YOU. That is what makes people continue to come back to us.

It sounds corny, but it's true. We literally try to put our customers above everything else, including our own employees sometimes! That means working after hours to answer emails, coming in on days off to pre-package orders over the weekend, you name it, we've done it. Heck, when my second daughter (Katelyn) was born in 2007, I drove back and forth every day from the hospital (60 miles away in Mountain View, CA) to process MJM orders for customers......and when I was finished, I would turn around and head back to the hospital to be with my family. I did that everyday for the 5 days/nights that my wife was in the hospital.

Being as large as we are, I personally have spoken to a lot of other magic store owners in the industry, and I've always believed that "there are plenty of people out there for everyone." I want other stores to succeed just like I want MJM to succeed. I want others to do well because I know that the same will come back to me. I'm a big believer in Karma, which is another reason why I don't run the company with dirty tactics or try to undermine anyone else in the industry.
