MJM PERSONAL PEEKS:

About ten years ago, I was designing an online, text-based multiplayer game for MJM Magic.   It was just for fun......and something that I never shared with anyone.   In fact, I SHELVED the game and haven't looked at it since 2009.

I recently thought that maybe I would take a look at it again.   It's really in a rough, early-stage of development, but I'm wondering if I can revive it and share it with you guys.   Those who like to play online games might find it entertaining.

Of course, I'd probably need some help from anyone who is good with graphic image design.  It's a text-based game, but all centered around a magic theme.  It would need lots of images to make it look nice, because I'm the one working on the coding engine behind the game (what makes it run).

I also may need help with anyone who is good at creating visual tutorials to outline the game and how it works.   If anyone is interested in being early beta testers to provide feedback, let me know.   I may select one or two people to fiddle around with it and we can see if we can put out a fun game for the masses!

For now, it will remain a hidden project of mine while I play around with it in my free time.

MJM PERSONAL PEEKS:

I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who have written to me, asking about how my Dad's health was doing.   It really touches me and means a lot.   More than you know, in fact.

I wish I had better news to report.......His last doctor appointment on Monday only gave him between 2 and 4 months to live.  At only 68 years old, that is especially hard to comprehend, especially when he feels like he will be around for years to come. 

I simply tell him to listen to his body and believe what he feels. If he feels better or stronger, then hold onto that!   Don't focus on anything negative, and appreciate the little things.

I will be visiting him tomorrow (Saturday) and see how he's doing.   I don't believe he is going to try chemo or further treatment because it would be too hard on him.   He weighed 270 pounds in March.   He is now down to 185.   He is putting his faith in God, so we both appreciate all your prayers for him.

I'm not ready to lose my Dad.  :(

Brandi and I met back in 1998 while we both worked at Target.   I was 23, she was 18, and I had the biggest crush on her!   Of course, back then, she had a boyfriend and I was "just the friend" who was destined to always be "the friend". 

But, unbeknownst to her, I had a plan.   It was Operation 'Hang Around Long Enough Until She Finally Realizes That I'm Better Than Her Boyfriend.'

This is closely related to a similar Operation called: 'Unobtrusively Stalk The Person Without Being Creepy.'

At first, it was a massive failure.   She eventually broke up with her boyfriend, but I was still "the friend."   But after a few months of slowing chipping away at her defensive wall, she realized what I always known: that we were meant to be together!

In fact, the Operation was such a success that SHE was the one who asked ME out!   And who says 'reverse psychology' isn't a real thing!!

We've now been together for 20 years, married for 16, and have two daughters together. 

Maybe one of these days, we will somehow be able to get away from MJM Magic long enough to have an actual vacation!   More on that in future newsletters!

Did you know that MJM Magic started out of a single dresser drawer in my closet?  It's true!   Back in 2004, I wanted to use my background in customer service to start a business but didn't know ANYTHING about how to start!

So I began bulk purchasing a few tricks (Color Monte was one of our very first) and stored them in a spare dresser drawer I had.   I think for the first month of MJM Magic, we only carried six products on our site!

In fact, I just looked up what our website looked like in December of 2004 and this is a screenshot:

Pretty hilarious, right?  Completely unrecognizable to the company we are today.  It's a totally different color scheme.....different layout.......but it shows you how far we have come (and how much the website and the business model has changed).

When I was a kid, I fell in love with magic.   My parents had purchased one of those Magic Sets for me.  You know, the one with the cheap cups and balls, the wool ropes, the plastic toothpick through coin trick, etc.

I was so proud.   I would learn the tricks and perform them for my family.

Then one night, my younger brother began sleepwalking.   He unconsciously got out of bed, walked over to the area where I kept all my magic, and then URINATED all over everything.

To say they were "soaked in pee" was an understatement.   You almost needed a life preserver to walk into the area.

He then tried to flush an imaginary toilet before walking back to his bed.

Of course, my parents caught him as he was finishing up, but it was too late.   The damage was done.  All my magic supplies were ruined.   They all went into the trash!   That experience single-handedly KILLED my desire to be a magician as a kid.

Ironically, it was that same brother who got me back into magic as an adult when he showed me a card trick that he learned on the Internet.  For some reason, it never occurred to me that you could learn magic online........and thus, MJM Magic was born! 

I decided at that moment to create an online magic store where people could come to easily purchase and learn magic whenever they wanted!

Chinese hackers?!   It looks like that to us.   Yesterday I noticed the MJM Magic website was a little slower than usual.   I then checked to see what our web traffic was like, and noticed there were almost 2,000 "visitors" on our website at the same exact time!!!

That's way higher than usual, so after some investigating, I noticed most of these connections were coming from China, and most likely either a spider bot or spam bot.   We don't know if it was a deliberate attack or just an invasive crawl of our website, but we didn't like it and had to do something about it.

So I did a few tweaks to block these connections, and hopefully our website will be a little faster when you go there today!

Today (September 6th) is mine and Brandi's 16th year wedding anniversary!   We've actually been a couple for 20 years, but married for 16 of those.  Usually around this time, we would take the weekend off to go to Monterey and spend some quality time away from everything.......but because of my dad being sick, I didn't want to make any plans.

So instead, we just ate a nice little breakfast together, and now it's business as usual!  I will be here finishing work before heading down to see my dad for the weekend......and Brandi is off to work a second job today through Sunday to help earn money for our daughters' gymnastics tuition. 

Good thing we have a strong relationship or else it would be strange to not spend your anniversary together!   Thanks to all of you who shop with us and help support MJM Magic with your business.  We really appreciate you and we always want you to know that.

First off, I want to say THANK YOU to all who sent me personal messages about my dad.  You guys brought tears to my eyes, and I'm very fortunate to have so many caring people out there who shop with us.

Anyway, I'm always doing EVERYTHING I can to make MJM Magic the best place for you to shop.   Recently, we had a customer mention that their Shopping Cart contents would disappear after a certain amount of time passed, and this caused a lot of frustration.    This is actually by design.   Not the frustration part, but the security and cleanup part of deleting any inactive browsing session when a user isn't logged in.

Well, I understand how this can be a problem, so today I implemented a new background feature which should HOPEFULLY fix that.   It will remember any items you add into your shopping cart (even if you're not logged in).   It will save this information into a local "cookie" file on your system and that way, it won't delete anything in your cart if you're not logged in.

As long as you don't have any cookie blockers or browser software which deletes them, it should hopefully work.   And if you've never had an issue with this, then nothing should appear any different for you.

MJM PERSONAL PEEKS:

We hope you had a great Labor Day weekend.  For me, my weekends are bittersweet.   Monday through Friday, I am always busy working and taking care of our MJM Magic customers.   On Saturdays (non-business hours),  I usually work and package up orders to get things shipped faster for you guys.

However, my dad (68) was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer.  The doctors only gave him a few months to live.   You can't imagine how hard this has been on me.  So now, every weekend, instead of monitoring emails and packaging orders, I travel down to see my dad and spend Saturday's hanging out with him.

I'm sharing this with you for two reasons:

1.  You are all important to me and I want you to know what is going on in my personal life.   Your thoughts and prayers for my dad's health would really mean a lot to me.

2.  When the time comes that my dad is no longer with us, I'm going to be a mess and might need your support and understanding if we need to take some time off for a few days.

Of course, I'll try to keep you all posted as we go on here.

In the meantime, I want to thank all of you who shop at MJM Magic and help keep my mind occupied!  Brandi and I really appreciate you.
